Cycling Routes Around Abermule

Abermule, home to Smithy Park, is situated on several well-known cycling routes, making it a popular stop for cyclists travelling through the beautiful Welsh countryside. At Smithy Park, we offer a couple of ideal spots for small tents, perfect for cyclists looking for a place to rest.

While we recommend booking ahead if you’re traveling with a group, we can usually accommodate solo cyclists without prior reservations. Enjoy the scenic rides and the welcoming atmosphere of Smithy Park on your journey.

There are five Montgomery Cycle Trails based in and around Montgomery, two of the trails take you through Abermule. These trails will provide you with beautiful views of the dramatic countryside of the Mid Wales Marches. The lanes are free of heavy traffic and therefore if you need to push up any hill it is easy to do so. Cycle Parking is available in Broad Street in the Montgomery town centre.

Cycling Trails

The Montgomery Trail has a circular trail from Abermule, Bettws Cedewain to Montgomery. This is a moderate cycle ride on peaceful, rural lanes with two steep hills to reach both Montgomery and Dolforwyn Castles. There are also a couple of more gentle climbs with many attractive views and an opportunity to detour along the traffic-free Montgomery Canal Path to Newtown.

17.5Miles (28.2km) 2-2.5hrs – Elevation Total Ascent: 488m

The second Montgomery Trail is via Llandyssil and Abermule. This is an attractive valley route followed by a steady climb, and rewards you with fantastic views over the Kerry Ridgeway and as far as Cader Idris on a clear day.

11.5 miles ( 18 km) 1 ½ hrs – Elevation Total Ascent 335m

The National Cycle Route 81 runs through Abermule , the route goes from Aberystwyth to Wolverhampton, with the section running through Wales called Lôn Cambria. Lôn Cambria travels 113 miles from the coast at Aberystwyth to the historic border town of Shrewsbury, crossing the heart of beautiful Mid Wales through the Cambrian mountains and alongside the beautiful Elan Valley reservoirs to Rhayader.

With red kites soaring above, the route follows quiet lanes linking the picturesque market towns of Llanidloes and Newtown.

A final climb on the Roman Road over Long Mountain offers panoramic views before descending into Shrewsbury.

Montgomery Canal is also on Route 81 and provides a traffic free cycle path that is right on our doorstep. Cyclists often use Smithy Park as a base to explore the trails or as a stopover on long rides. Whether you’re setting out on local adventures or passing through on a longer journey, you’re always welcome. Enjoy your ride and rest easy at Smithy Park.
